Draining $400,000 in crypto: the infamous Angel Drainer group

Sneaky move alert: there's this hacker group called Angel Drainer, right? They've gone and swiped funds from 128 wallets.

The loss? ⇾ $400,000 in crypto.

This is taken through Safe Vault, originally known as Gnosis Safe, a smart contract-based platform designed for securely managing digital assets on the Ethereum blockchain.

How did they do it? 

1. created a fake Safe Vault contract, a digital trap designed to look like a legitimate service;

2. tricked users into visiting this fake contract;

3. users were deceived into signing a permit (Permit2) with the fake Safe Vault as the operator, thinking they are performing a routine action;

4. this Permit2 exploit granted hackers unlimited approval to move funds from the user's wallet across different smart contracts;

5. the use of a Safe Vault contract adds a layer of perceived legitimacy, as such contracts are usually trusted and verified, misleading users into a false sense of security.

It’s not Safe Vault’s fault ⇾ they were just the costume these crypto crooks wore to the heist.

Apparently, the hacker group used Safe Vault’s smart contracts because:

• “Etherscan automatically adds a verification flag verification flag to Safe contracts.”

• and “can provide a false sense of security as it’s unrelated to validating whether or not the contract is malicious.”
